Moving Responsibilities

Know Your Moving Responsibilities For A Stress-Free Move

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulates the trucking industry in the US. Its main goal is to reduce crashes and injuries that involve large trucks and buses. The same body is responsible for publishing movers’ responsibilities online, with the purpose of legally protecting movers in case of an incident.

Without further ado, here are the most important moving responsibilities you should know to enjoy a smooth and hassle-free move.

#1: Read All The Documents Issued By The Movers

Simply hiring a moving company you know is trustworthy, reliable and experienced in the industry does not mean your job is done. You will also need to carefully read and make sure you fully understand all the terms, rights and responsibilities found in the Bill of Lading. This bill is the contract you and the mover will be signing and it will incorporate all of the items you will have the moving company haul to your new address. Make sure the bill is complete and it covers all the things you will to be moved, and only sign it when it is 100% complete.

#2: Be Available At The Time Of Pickup/Delivery

If you cannot be present at the time of the pickup, you will need to appoint someone to represent you. However, unless something unexpected happens on the day of the big move, you should do everything in your power to be there. You know your items better than anyone and you should be able to spot any discrepancies or missing items from the trucks.

It is also a good idea to try to be present for the truck weighing and compare it to the weight ticket. The difference between the weight of the full truck minus the eight of the empty truck will give you the actual weight of the items inside, also referred to as the tare weight. It is your right to participate in the truck weighing procedures both at the old address, as well as at the new address. Since you will be charged base on the tare weight, it is essential that you immediately get in touch with the mover as soon as you notice any changes.

#3: Get In Touch With Your Mover If There Are Any Changes

Anything ranging from the moving date or hour to the need to incorporate any additional items in the moving load should be immediately communicated to the movers. They will need to readjust the original estimates in case any additional items will need to be added or eliminated from the moving trucks.

#4: Make Your Payment In The Agreed Amount/Form

Another responsibility you have as a mover refers to making the agreed payment in the initially established form and at the scheduled time. This could be anything from a cashier’s check to a credit card or even cash. Most movers ask for their payment at the time of the delivery. At times, you might be charged at the time of the agreement, provided you will be using a credit card. This is in order to ensure your payment will clear, and the money will be usually charged to the card on the day of the actual delivery.

#5: File Loss/Delay Claims With The Mover

In case you notice anything wrong, missing, damaged or delayed on the day of the move,  you are advised to immediately file a claim with the moving company. Know their procedure for filing a lost or damaged items claim and respect all of their indicated steps, or else you will risk having your claim rejected. You will be directly responsible for knowing this procedure, so make sure you take your time to study it carefully.

#6: Research Your Moving Company

This will ensure your precious belongings will be well protected during the move and save you from a lot of headaches.
